Choose the power supply for the whole PC, not one wattage number.
A dependable PSU must match the system's sustained demand, fast load changes, connectors, case, local electrical input and upgrade plan. Wattage matters, but it cannot describe protection quality, voltage behavior, cable compatibility or installation safety by itself.

ATX 3.1 and modern graphics power
Intel's current desktop power-supply design guide aligns with ATX 3.1 and includes electrical, mechanical, safety and reliability guidance for desktop PSU designs. A standards label is useful context, not permission to ignore the specifications of the exact graphics card, processor or power supply.
PCI-SIG identifies 12V-2x6 as the connector defined in PCIe CEM 5.1 that replaces 12VHPWR. Do not choose or install a graphics-power cable by appearance alone. Follow the power-supply and graphics-card manuals, fully seat the connector, provide sensible bend clearance and inspect the connection before powering the system.
Five checks before buying
Inventory: record the exact CPU, GPU, motherboard, drives, cooling hardware and planned upgrades.
Requirements: read the graphics-card manufacturer's required system power and connector notes, then check whether a partner-board model differs.
Fit: verify PSU form factor, length, intake clearance, cable space and case mounting orientation.
Evidence: use credible electrical testing that measures protections, regulation, ripple, noise and sustained behavior; a logo or efficiency badge is not the whole review.
Instructions: confirm every cable belongs to that exact PSU model and is routed without strain.
Safety rules that prevent expensive mistakes
Never mix modular PSU cables unless the power-supply manufacturer explicitly lists them as compatible.
Never open a power supply. Internal components can retain dangerous energy after the unit is unplugged.
Stop after warning signs. Burning odor, melted plastic, discoloration, crackling or repeated protection shutdowns require power removal and inspection.
Diagnose before upsizing. Random shutdowns can also come from heat, unstable memory, damaged wiring, firmware or another failing component.
