Your 144Hz monitor may still be running at 60Hz.

Buying a high-refresh display does not guarantee that Windows is using its fastest supported mode. Confirm the selected display, resolution, cable path, monitor menu, graphics settings, and an actual refresh-rate reading before replacing hardware.

Select the real rate

Open Settings, System, Display, Advanced display, select the correct monitor, and choose its supported refresh rate.

The GPU port, cable or adapter, monitor input, resolution, and color mode must all support the target combination.

Measure the result

Use Advanced display, the monitor information menu, or a trusted frame-rate test. Do not judge refresh rate from a still desktop.

Step 1: select the correct display in Windows

  1. Open Advanced display. Go to Start, Settings, System, Display, then Advanced display.
  2. Choose the gaming monitor. Multi-monitor systems can show a different panel than the one you intend to change.
  3. Select the target refresh rate. Choose 120Hz, 144Hz, 165Hz, 240Hz, or another mode only when Windows lists it for that display.
  4. Recheck resolution. Microsoft notes that some rate choices require a different resolution. Keep the monitor's recommended resolution unless its documentation says otherwise.
  5. Confirm the change. Return to Advanced display and verify that the active mode reports the rate you selected.

A fixed refresh rate and variable refresh rate are related but separate settings. First confirm the display is running at the intended maximum rate. Then enable Adaptive-Sync or FreeSync in the monitor menu when supported and configure the matching GPU feature. NVIDIA documents G-SYNC under Display, Set up G-SYNC, and provides an on-screen indicator for verification.

Keep the game inside the display's supported range and test one change at a time. Screen tearing, frame-time stutter, network lag, and a 60Hz desktop setting are different symptoms and need different evidence.
